Excited to meet you!

So I am writing this post from a doctors waiting room. I have an ear infection and need to get checked out. Poor me:(. But it is a nice waiting room and there is this adorable baby sitting next to me. I think he wants to throw down with me due to the glare I am getting from him, but I’ll go the mature way and avoid a fight;).

Anyways, the macho baby has me thinking about you. I am still in a fuzzy stage where it seems like you are real/not real to me. I can finally see your mom’s body start to change. Which signals to me that you are coming! Bit sometimes I have to say to myself, ” matt, you ate going to be a dad!”.

I just wanted to write and say that this wait is hard, but I know when you do get here out will be well worth the wait.

Love,

Daddy

Back to School – One last time

Pony Up!

Pony Up!

So here I sit, in my graduate class listening to my professor introduce himself for the third time (I have taken a class with him three times). I am excited to know that tonight is the begining of the end for my academic career. I only have 7 more classes left until I officially graduate with my Master of Arts from Southern Methodist University! This is an exciting time, but is very stressful as well due to the amount of work I have to do. I never thought when I started this program that I would be a manager at a successful company, I thought I would be in my position once I received my Masters, not before! These next 30 weeks will be difficult due to the  amount of coursework I will have, but it should all be gravy as long as I give it to God.

The classes I am taking this semester deal with negotiations and cultural disputes. I find this to be very intriguing since negotiations is a skill that I will need for dealing with you and your mommy. 😉 Plus the cultural aspect of my class is good because you will truly be a “Mexican-American” So I need to be able to show you how to bridge a cultural gap that is vast. This post has seemed more serious than most, but I felt a little more serious today than normal as well.

~Note to Baby~

I  have several reasons to be excited knowing that the end of my college years are closing, but the main reason I am excited is because I will be finished before you arrive to meet me. 🙂 It will be an extremely fulfilling thing to walk for graduation in May and know that you will be at the end waiting for me to hold you. Can’t wait to see you there. 🙂

Love,

Daddy

Olympic Spirit

It's Olympic time again!

It's Olympic time again!

Now back from my weekend of fun and festivities, its time to get back on track. This whole weekend I was busy watching the opening days of the Olympics. (I know I should have updated you), but I have been glued to my TV all weekend.

The Olympics is that one event that takes place every four years that makes you get interested in sports you would never watch otherwise. I mean my friend Phil and I watched synchronized diving for two hours and found ourselves critiquing their dives. Only during the Olympics would that ever happen.

One thing that has been mesmerizing to watch has been the Michael Phelps era of swimming. I don’t care about swimming. I never watch it, nor do I swim in a pool, but come Olympic-time, I act like I know everything. I have water-cooler talk about how this swimmer beat that swimmer and that country is so over-rated. It is sad to look at myself from a third-person perspective, but I can’t help it!

I tend to imagine what I would be like if I were to be an announcer for the Olympics, particularly swimming. It would go something like this…..

…..And there off! Phelps has been shattering all the records for the butterfly this year, I mean look at that form. He is keeping his chin to the water like a baby keeps his thumb in his mouth. Absolutely spectacular! I am convinced that Phelps is related to the Manning family. I mean everything that family does is golden. Archie Manning should be proud of his two sons, and now his adopted one…..

Michael Phelps-Manning???

Michael Phelps-Manning???

Ya, so looking at it now I know it would probably not be the best thing if I was an announcer, but I can asure you that if I was I would be able to compare an Olympic athlete to a NFL star. What can I say? It’s a gift.

~Note to baby~

I am sad you are not here to watch the Olympics with your Dad, but looking on the bright side of things, you will be 3 years old when the next Olympics take place, and guess what? They will be in London! How ironic!

Maybe my baby can be on China's gymnastics team!

Maybe my baby can be on China's gymnastics team!

Love,

Daddy.

Favorite Sports teams

Goo evening world. Sorry I have not been able to post daily. Work has been crazy as of late, and my spare time has either been spent working out, or sleeping. So with all the exercise I have been getting lately I felt inspired to talk about sports teams today.

So today’s little nugget of glory about me is:

“What is Dad’s favorite sports teams”

I have to break this down into specific sports as I am a huge fan of sports in general, so bare with me.

Professional Football (American) – Pittsburgh Steelers

Is this love, that I'm feeling?

Is this love, that I'm feeling?

I have always been a huge fan of the NFL, but I have never really claimed a team as my own. Usually the son is a fan of the father’s favorite team, but my Dad has poor choice when it comes to the NFL :), so I was left on my own to choose a team for many years. I can say that I have had a luke-warm feeling towards the Pittsburgh Steelers, but I also tend to like the team that is winning at the time. So I have to say I am a fare weather fan who just likes to watch the sport. But if I have to make a choice, I’ll stick with the Steelers.

College Football (NCAA) – Texas Longhorns

HOOK'EM!

HOOK'EM!

So this one is pretty easy, I always have liked the color orange, so it was a matter of time before I became a Texas Longhorns fan. I love the tradition, and I dislike Oklahoma with a passion, so this team fit all my needs.

Professional Basketball (NBA) – LA Lakers

KOBE!

KOBE!

So early on I poked fun at my Dad for having poor choice in professional teams, but this is one that choice that makes me say I am proud to be my Father’s son. The LA Lakers are the greatest NBA team off all time. I know some will say the Celtics are the greatest team of all-time, but to them I say, Shut it! The Lakers are in the hunt for a championship almost every decade, which shows the legacy the team has. I smile knowing that I will buy you clothes to wear that say GO L.A!

College Basketball (NCAA) – North Carolina Tar Heels

It's Awesome Baby!

It's Awesome Baby!

When I was 13 years old my family moved to Winston-Salem, and from that point on my life was forever changed in the way I saw College Basketball. The ACC is by far the greatest conference in the country for basketball and it shows. The entire state practically stops working just to watch the ACC championship game.

The first time I experienced anything related to the Tar Heels is when I had a competition in the Tar Heels practice facility. This is the arena that the team used to play in before the “Dean Dome”. I got to walk where great players of the past had played. Micheal Jordan, James Worthy, and the list goes on. I was immediately hooked from that moment on. I always wanted to go there to graduate, but I never had the chance, I hope that maybe one day you can walk in the passion of your Father and go to the greatest college in the world!

Professional Baseball (MLB) – Boston Red Sox

YANKEES SUCK!

YANKEES SUCK!

So this one is really easy, see my Dad was always a Dodger’s fan growing up, and I was always excited to hear the tradition of the team, but I never liked the team logo or team colors, so I never really grew to like the Dodgers. I never really liked baseball growing up either, but that all changed in the fall of 2004.

See the home run chases that Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa had in 1998 really perked my interest in the sport, but I still wasn’t sold. There was one thing I was sold on regarding baseball and that was my hatred of the Yankees. I never liked them and in the late 90’s there were a dynasty. So I researched the Yankees in 1999 and aimed my sights on the Red Sox. I was sold from that point on as to what team I would follow, but it was really confirmed in the fall of 1004 when the BoSox came back 3-0 to beat the Yankees in the ALCS. That was amazing. My wife and I watched every single game of that ALCS and we jumped up and down on the couch every time they won. It was glorious. I hope to jump up and down in the future with you and your Mom when the Red Sox win another World Series.

College Baseball (NCAA) – Dallas Baptist University Patriots

Patriots 4 Life.

Patriots 4 Life.

I know that DBU is my Alma mater, but honestly, my baseball team rocks. They have won several CWS at the division II level and were award an invitation to the Division I world series championship in only their second year of eligibility in the division. I had the opportunity to sit next to some of the greatest college players and future MLB players. It was a great experience and am proud to say I am a Patriot!

Professional Football (Soccer) – Arsenal (Barely)

Two tickets to the gun show.

Two tickets to the gun show.

This is a hard one for me to decide on. I have a favorite team for every football league in the world, so it is hard to choose just one as my favorite, but I will say that this team is my top overall (Just barely) football team in the world.

The other team that comes close is Cruz Azul. I love that team and am always excited to see them do well.

Si habla en espanol

Si habla en espanol

~Note to Baby~

So there you have it. Those are your Dad’s favorite teams in the whole world. I can’t wait to see what type of sports you like. I would love for us to like the same teams, but don’t worry if you don’t we will be fine, just as long as you are never a Duke blue devil, Oklahoma Sooner, New York Yankee, or Boston Celtic fan. 😉

So True

So True

Love,

Daddy

About me – Things I Hate

So we have been going through things I like, but I wanted to go through the things I hate also. (Or dislike with a passion as my wife likes me to say) If you have spent any amount of time around me, you would know the things I am not very fond of. The list is short, but I make it clear what items are on that list.

So today I am going to talk about the first item on the list .

So today’s little nugget of glory about me is:

“What is Dad’s least favorite food/thing in the whole world?”

Tomatoes…….A word that brings shivers down my spine just when I think about it. It is the most disgusting thing on this earth, other than spiders, but that is another post. Anything that massacreds around as a fruit, but is really a vegetable is something we need to be afraid of. I mean honestly, have you ever looked inside a tomato? It looks like the inside of road kill. It is gross! I have said for many years that if I were to wake up surrounded by Tomatoes, I would know where I am…….(*Cough* Hades *Cough*).

You say Tomato, I say Tomatoe

You say Tomato, I say Tomatoe

Another key point I have to show why tomatoes are bad is the spelling. I mean seriously, can anyone actually spell the word right? We all know that are past VP of this great nation could not even spell it right, so that shows that we should hate it. Anything that the English-speaking world can’t spell without thinking about it should be put on the Axis of Evil.

The legendary amount of hatred I have towards tomatoes is well known, and to prove that point I have a story that shows my dislike for tomatoes. When Perla and I were still dating we were at a restaurant with her family. They jokingly asked me to eat a tomato. The reasoning for this horrific request? If I loved Perla with all my heart than I would do anything for her….including eating a wretched tomato. I hesitantly agreed to take a bite of it, only to find myself running to the bathroom gagging.

Everyone got a good laugh, but it made me realize something. I would take a bullet for Perla, but there was something I just would not do to prove my love to my wife, and your future Mommy. The major thing that I would not do is save your Mom from a killer tomato, if Perla was attacked my a giant tomato I would have to pass on saving her. It is hard for me to say that, but I have to draw the line. The easiest way to defeat me is to start throwing tomatoes at me. It is my kryptonite; it disables me. The power of the tomato is strong and I am too weak to fight it.

So now that you know my weakness, you can help save your Dad (and Mom) from the future threat of tomatoes attacking our family.

Love,

Daddy

Worst Monday ever!

There is always Tuesday

There is always Tuesday

So as I was driving home from work yesterday, I drove by my favorite restaurant. I drive by it several times a day on my way to and from work, but today was different. I was perplexed as to why my favorite restaurant’s parking lot was empty. I asked my wife if she knew anything and she gave me the worst news in the world.

Bennigan’s had official closed up shop, and whats worse, it had been closed for 3 days and I was completely oblivious to this horrible news. And….AND to make things even worse, the last meal I had at Bennigan’s was a crappy salad.

The End of an Era.

The End of an Era.

I will now have 5 dates I will always remember.

They are:

(In order of importance)

  1. July 25th, 2008 – Last meal at Bennigan’s
  2. August 15th, 1984 – My Birthday
  3. January 3rd, 2004 – Perla and I’s wedding anniversary
  4. December 24th, 1983 – Perla’s Birthday
  5. September 11th, 2001 – WTC Attacks

~Note to Baby~

I am extremely sorry you will not get to share the glorious food I had to enjoy like the Monte Cristo or the amazing turkey o’toole, but I will do my best to find the ingredients and recipes for them. That way we can share the best food an average, family-style, middle-class American restaurant had to offer this great nation.

Single Tear...

Love,

Daddy 😦

Favorite Color

So, before I get into my post, I feel I must vent a bit. See I had the unfortunate task of terminating an employee today. It was not fun and I pray I don’t have to do it again. I was sad, so after I finished praying about it I had the typical what would Jesus do moment. He comforted me, and all was well; but a little later I started to think,

Everybody's workin' for the weekend.

Everybody's workin' for the weekend.

“What would Patrick Swayze do?”

I was remind of the classic quote from the film Roadhouse that, “Pain Don’t Hurt!”. So I was comforted by my moment with Jesus and was also comforted knowing that Dalton from roadhouse would be fine as well.

So today’s little nugget of glory about me is:

“What is Dad’s favorite color?”

Not quite sure if I can pin-point when I liked the color orange, but I am pretty sure I liked the color because everything colored orange tastes great.

I mean seriously, if you can look at me in the face and say you don’t like orange candy slices, I would have to question if you are a human or not.

Eat me Seymour, Eat me all night long.

Eat me Seymour, Eat me all night long.

Those things are delicious. I have never had a candy that was so good, yet at the same time you know that eating them is probably going to kill you. It is the ultimate catch-22. I love/hate who ever created those gooey, yummy, treats of sweetness.

Supreme Size Fries, Please.

Supreme Size Fries, Please.

The other awesome relation the color orange has is to a famous burger franchise. I will call it McDowell’s. The orange screams, “Eat more french fries and stuff your face with apple pie goodness!”. McDowell’s knows exactly how to reel children in, I mean the toy’s in the happy meals when I was a kid were so amazing. They had burgers and french fries that transformed into robots! I mean, the 80’s were awesome anyways, but whoever created the McRobot is probably in the top ten list of wealthy people in the world.

I am the Burger King!

I am the Burger King

So there you have it, Dad’s favorite color is Orange because anything that is orange must taste good. Unless there are orange tomatoes, but I will leave that for another post. 😉

Love,

Daddy.

Cliff Notes for Fatherhood

So easy, even a Caveman could do it!

So easy, even a Caveman could do it!

So my sister-in-law was nice enough to buy my wife and I a couple of books to help guide us as future first-time parents. I was thankful for her generousity and sat down to take a look yesterday. I was generally impressed with the content of each book, but what stood out the most in my readings was that the books were used, and one specific one for only fathering had a hand-written dedication to the past owner of the book. It read:

To: Phil

From: Kathy

Why?

Is that a comforting thing to say in a new father book dedication? I was quite scared to see that, but luckily I have a friend named Phil, So I will just use white-out over the name Kathy and put mine there. I think it is a very appropriate message to a best friend.

~Note to Baby~

While your Aunt has been buying your Mom and I all these self-help books to changing your future poopie diapers, she is also buying you clothes at the Gap. They are very cute, but I think your aunt believe’s you are going to be 30 inches when you are born. 😉 I know you will be tall and probably destroy at any sport you play, but I am sure you will not be two and a half feet long when you come to this earth. If you are, I will have to deal with a very mad Mommy, so be nice to Dad ok?

Love,

Daddy

A little about me – Favorite Movie

I feel like everytime I create a post for a blog I should start it out like Captain Kirk.

Star Date 9920. There’s something on the wing….Some…Thing

Anyways I thought I would share with you who your dad is. What my likes and dislikes are, and what I have seen that has molded me into the man I am today. I will try and give you a little piece of who I am over the next few months so you will not wonder who Daddy is when you are 13. 🙂

So today’s little nugget of glory about me is:

“What is Dad’s favorite movie?”

There are two words to describe the awesomeness that is your Dad’s favorite movie.

See below:

I Love Katie Holmes!

I Love Katie Holmes!

Of course the Movie poster does not do the film justice, So here is a sample of where men are made:

So there you have it. Top Gun is your Dad’s favorite movie of all time. I can’t wait until we can watch it together! Of course if you are a girl, I may have to completely change this post and say something like the little mermaid was my favorite movie. 😉

Love,

Daddy

In the begining

Good morning World! It is quite late, or early depending on how you look at it. This week has been a very eventful one for me and my family. We found out that we are pregnant! Well…Not me so much, but my wife is. So with that in mind I wanted to begin a blog that will document this joyous journey and allow my future kid(s) to see what Daddy was doing and how things looked to him during this time.

I will end every post with a little note to my future kid(s) telling them what I am thinking and how much I already love him/her.

~Note to Baby~

So I know you are just a small creation inside your mother’s womb right now (7 weeks old), but I can’t help but wonder what you look like. I went to a baby site that showed pictures of what you look like now, and I have to be honest…It’s quiet scary. You are supposedly the size of a kidney bean and you look like a lizard!

(See picture below)

Lizard Baby!

Lizard Baby!

Remember, no matter how cool or amazing you get, I will always remind you of the time when you had a tail! 😉 I love you so much and I am very excited to meet you!

-Love,

Daddy
